February 4th- Wake Up! Black America = 46% of New HIV/AIDS Diagnoses

February 7th is Black HIV/AIDS Day In the United States, the HIV/AIDS epidemic is a health crisis for African Americans. Blacks make up 12% of the US population. However, in 2006, African Americans accounted for 45% of new HIV infections and 46% of those living with HIV. Black gay/bisexual men and black women are the most affected by the HIV epidemic.

  • One in 30 black women will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime.
  • The rate of new infections among black women in 2006 was 15 times that of white women and four times that of Hispanic women.
  • AIDS was the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25-34 according to most recent data (2004)
  • One in 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime.
  • Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) accounted for 63% of new infections among black men in 2006.
  • Since the beginning of the epidemic, over 200,000 African Americans with AIDS have died.

We can stop these rates with education and action. Real Talk. Real Change.

Do you know any Black LBTQ women on the big screen? Can you name any in television, radio, music, art, etc.? Black LGBTQA people in media have been invisible. Invisible to producers, writers, and to you too. But times are changing and we’re here to push progress forward.
